Opus

It doesn't stand for anything either >:(

  • Developed in 2012 by Xiph.Org
  • Fully Open Standard and Royalty Free
  • Very good software support
  • Low latency, music or speech optimized audio codec
  • Supports:
    • 16-bit sampling depth only
    • 48kHz sampling rate
    • 255 audio channels
    • 256 kbit/s/channel bitrate
